KampOng Training Deck

Tengilhan House at KampOng Campus
The Project
KampOng Campus sits on the crest of a ridge on the rural west coast of Sabah; it straddles land (tanah) and water (air) with Mt. Kinabalu and the South China Sea. It is a learning space that will be accessible to surrounding communities, Sabah-wide colleagues and students, regional allies and global partners, and will embody the ethos of sustainable living it advocates, learns and teaches.
In a partnership between KampOng, Forever Sabah Institute and Arkitrek, we are co-developing a program to design and build a “floating” training deck that will be an essential feature of KampOng Campus. The deck will be built on and over the edge of a slope, floating above the forest canopy and providing a creative space for groups as small as 10 and as large as 50: for workshops or yoga, training or dance, work or play, retreats or parties.
Arkitrek Camp will gather local builders and craftsmen and Malaysian and international architecture students in a twelve-week immersion at KampOng to design and build the deck, through a convergence of culture, creativity, knowledge, skills and learning.
The deck will be central to KampOng’s program of activities, as well as its ability to offer the space to partners and colleagues within the civil society movement and communities more broadly. Our longterm vision is to build a beacon of hope in the region, a place to ground and nourish, reconnect tanah (land) and air (water), remember tanahair (the homeland) and our place in the web of all life.
