Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre – Education Deck

The education deck project is part of a larger masterplan that we are working on to expand the facilities at BSBCC

The Project

The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is a wildlife conservation and research centre for improving animal welfare and rehabilitation of the Malayan sun bear. It also aims to raise public awareness about the plight of the sun bears and to raise conservation awareness about this species.

Arkitrek has been working with BSBCC since 2008, designing buildings, bear enclosures and walkways, and helping to set up their volunteer programme. Now we’re delighted to continue this relationship by providing a live design programme to design and build a much needed expansion to their environmental education facilities.

This Arkitrek Camp will gather local builders and craftsmen and Malaysian and international architecture students in a ten-week immersion at BSBCC in Sandakan, Sabah to design and build the deck, through a convergence of culture, creativity, knowledge, skills and learning.

The deck will provide a space to brief schools and other large groups visiting the centre, and take pressure off the other facilities that are used by thousands of visitors every month.

The Programme

This Arkitrek Camp is a ten week live design project. 1-week of induction and training will take place close to the town of Sandakan, before moving to site to being the co-design and build process. On site you will work alongside a team of local builders and artisans under the direction of Arkitrek staff.

Cost and Application Process

The cost per person is MYR10,000 and there are twelve places available on this Arkitrek Camp. Successful applicants will be notified at the latest by one week after the application deadline.  Upon being offered a place you will be asked to complete a booking form and pay a 10% non-returnable deposit. Full payment deadline is 30 days before the start date.
